On June 22, 1813, a British naval squadron under admiral, George Cockburn sailed into Hampton Roads with the intent to destroy the Gosport Naval Yard. The British attack consisted of a flanking movement across Craney Island, and a direct assault from landing BARGES . The American artillery drove off the British flank attack and the landing BARGES ran aground. British shoulders who left the BARGES became stuck in the mud becoming still targets for the American forces. The British retreated. The battle saved Norfolk from capture, but Hampton was sacked and burned for retribution.
